In this two part series Raven Lang teaches the physiology, psychology, science and spirituality of the birth experience, and demystifies the reproductive state. Case histories and stories related to each subject are presented from Raven’s experience as a midwife, a mother, and a TCM practitioner. This series is designed to give practitioners a deeper understanding of childbearing, the knowledge necessary to deal with problems that can arise, and offers new ideas for immediate implementation with pregnant patients.

Part 1- The First Trimester
If you want to learn how to provide safe and effective health care to women who are having children, The Art and Science of Obstetrics – Part One – The First Trimester is for you. It combines the physiology, psychology, spirit and science of pregnancy. This workshop is the first part of a three-part distance learning course, and covers what a practitioner needs to know relative to the first trimester. Acupuncture, herbs (both TCM and American), and sound advice are given, and when the practitioner has completed Part One, the reproductive state for those first three months is demystified. This course will give the practitioner a deeper understanding of childbearing and the knowledge necessary to deal with problems that can arise during the first trimester.

Topics Covered: the psychology and physiology of reproduction, early signs of pregnancy, counseling for the first trimester, abdominal palpation, finding and interpreting fetal heart tones, and the treatment of common problems such as miscarriage, diet and nutrition, anemia, morning sickness, and hyperemesis.

Part 2- The Second Trimester
Topics covered: treatment of common infections in pregnancy, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes, low back pain, sciatica, hemorrhoids and varicosities, carpal tunnel, vaginal infections, as well as the history and politics of women's health as it relates to obstetrics, and counseling for the second and third trimesters.

Approved for 13.5 continuing education credits by the California Acupuncture Board in Category 1 provider 680. Approved for 13.5 PDAs with the NCCAOM in AOM-BIO provider 683.
