The Mayway and Plum Flower™ Story

Yvonne Lau |

In 1969 our parents escaped communism in China to open a tiny herb shop in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Inpired by their hopes for the future and to honor their adopted country they named it Mayway 美威 “America is Mighty”.

Our grandfather was the village herbalist and our parents served the Chinese community in the San Francisco Bay Area. As first-generation Americans we envision a future in which traditional Chinese medicine is fully integrated into American life. By ensuring the exceptional quality and authenticity of our products we strengthen your practice support the industry as a whole and foster the acceptance of and respect for Chinese medicine in this country.

A poet at heart our father named our house label Plum Flower - one of the “Four Gentlemen” (or Four Noble Ones) of Chinese culture. Plum orchid bamboo and chrysanthemum embody the Confucian concept of junzi or "gentlemen" representing noble character and morality. Plum flowers bloom in the desolation of winter serving as a metaphor for inner beauty endurance and resilience.

Fifty years later we remain at the forefront of raising the quality standards of herbal products.

We are deeply grateful to be a part of the TCM community enjoy working together as closely as four siblings can and cherish the friendships partnerships and trust you’ve honored us with.

Thank you for your support of Mayway and of real Chinese medicine.
