Advanced Herbal Prescription Writing Distance Learning 8 Course Set (Distance Learning)

This 8-course series presents the art of custom herbal prescription writing. The course covers the four essential skills necessary for practitioners to be able to write herbal prescriptions individually tailored to the needs of each patient. These include a review of patient interviewing skills, enhanced diagnostic evaluation, the necessity of a detailed treatment principle, and a revisiting of herb categories in order to clearly differentiate the unique applications of herbs within each category. The course will provide you with information you will use the very next day in your office. Most importantly you will learn new ways of seeing and thinking. Practice case studies for you to do outside of class will be provided with each module.

This is being offered as a set of 8 courses that will each offer 2 CEUs. Approved for Distance Learning Credit by the NCCAOM. Course 1: Introduction to Course Information & Material, Herbs that Release Exterior

The art of custom herbal prescription writing comes from a synthesis of several skills. Essential in all aspects of clinical care is the ability to conduct a thorough, comprehensive patient interview. A sample case study will be presented outlining all of these essential steps and will include a custom herbal formula developed through the use of these newly learned skills.

  1. We will discuss the details specific to TCM that allows the physician to interview the patient in a comprehensive manner.
  2. We will review TCM diagnostic methods with an eye specifically toward herbal medicine treatment.
  3. The essential step in developing a thorough treatment plan is writing a detailed treatment principle. We will discuss this step in detail as it is the most frequently overlooked step between diagnosis and treatment.
  4. Finally, we will discuss the necessary ability to differentiate individual herbs within single herb categories based on best use of individual herbs.
  5. Following the course introduction, we will review herbs in the Release Exterior category

In the eighth class we will take an in-depth look at the most frequently used herbs within the Open Orifices and Extinguish Wind & Tremor category. The review will include graphs comparing individual herb functions, thermal properties, entering meridians and best use for each herb. At the end of the class a detailed case study will be presented and afford the students an opportunity to participate in both the development of a treatment principle and the selection of herbs for the final custom prescription.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Mark W. Frost, MSTCM, L.Ac. is chair of the Herbal Medicine Department at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, California. Professor Frost teaches in both the Masters and Doctoral Programs, serves as a clinical supervisor in colleges Community Clinic, and has had a private practice in San Francisco for over 30 years. He is the author of numerous articles on Chinese herbal medicine and has presented at several TCM conferences since 2014.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

All courses have been approved by the California Acupuncture Board, Provider #680, for 2 hours each of continuing education in category 1. All courses are approved by the NCCAOM, Provider #683, for 2 hours each of continuing education in AOM-BIO.

A PDF handout will be included for each course. The instructor recommends Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica, 3rd Edition by Dan Bensky, Steven Clavey & Eric Stöger.

RECORDING ACCESS

The webinar recordings will be available for playback for up to 2 years from purchase.

CEU CREDIT REQUIREMENTS

To receive continuing education credits, the student must complete the course worksheet for each course. At the end of the course worksheet, the confirmation page will provide the student with the link to the course assessment. Passing of the course is 8 out of 10 questions correct for each assessment. Students will have an opportunity to repeat an assessment that does not receive a passing score after the initial attempt.
